Now in its fifth consecutive year, Merrill Lynch arteaméricas is opening its upcoming edition at the Miami BeachConvention Center, where it will run from March 16 through March 18, 2007 Merill Lynch arteaméricas is the first fair devoted exclusively to contemporary Latin American art in the United States. It includes the participation of 70 art galleries representing every country in the American continent and featuring the best proposals by emerging artists, as well as that of 7 foundations focusing on the promotion and diffusion of Latin American art. This year, arteaméricas wishes to highlight the work of its special guest artist, Gyula Kosice. Born in 1924 inBuenos Aires city, this sculptor, painter, theoretician and poet is one of the pioneers of avant-garde kinetic and light art. He has created monumental sculptures, hydro-spatial itineraries, hydro-murals and digital works. He was the introducer at the global level of water and neon light as component elements of artworks. We will be joined on this occasion by the CulturalCenter of the Inter-American Development Bank. Its exhibition space will feature 18 videos selected by a jury comprised of Irma Arestizábal and José Ignacio Roca. Thus, video, an artistic practice that is gaining an increasingly important place in the art of Latin America and of the world at large, will also be represented at the fair. Another important event included in the program of arteaméricas is a symposium on Latin American art, which will focus on the different visions of the art trends in Latin America and the Caribbean. The goal of the director of arteaméricas 2007, Diego Costa Peuser, is to highlight the most important aspects of contemporary Latin American art, in such a way that the creativity and originality of Latin American artists may be duly valued, and that they may gain visibility and a well-deserved position at the international level.
